Announcing A New Chapter
Hey there, fellow maker, I'm thrilled to share some exciting news with you today!
First – Modern Maker Stamps isn't going anywhere! Stamp-making is still happening, that’s not the announcement, you can breathe now. And you can still count on me for custom stamps to make your packaging legit and beautiful for the foreseeable future.
Ok now, if we’re longtime friends you may remember that about 10 years ago I started a highly ambitious project: 100 Days of Hand-Carved Stamps (pictured below). Thanks to Instagram, that project quickly opened up a lot of unexpected opportunities: contributing to a real-life published book (that I still visit in my public library!), appearances in Macy’s Herald Square and Pottery Barn and HGTV Magazine, speaking at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art… it was an absolute artist’s dream come true.
But when I finished that project, I had to hustle to keep up with the influx of custom orders. It was beautiful… and overwhelming. So I did what I thought was the next step: I invested in a “production assistant”: a laser engraver. My hands said, “Thank you.” My clients said, “Thank you.” My bank account (eventually) said, “Thank you.”
Since then, the business has grown into what you know as Modern Maker Stamps, a blossoming and ever-growing creative business. It's an incredible blessing to work with small businesses. And I’ve gotten to do it - and do it well - every day for over a decade.
But here's the thing – I still wax poetic about the path that I walked away from - the one where instead of growing a business, I kept carving with my hands every day. During the transition to this dream business, I’ve always felt like a little piece of myself got lost.
So, here’s the big announcement:
Starting on January 1st, 2024, I'm restarting my 100 Days of Hand-Carving Project. I'm reclaiming that path I started a decade ago. Because why not? I'll be carving 100 blocks by hand next year, and I. CANNOT. WAIT.
And there's more to come! I’m hopeful that this project will be the beginning of many new printmaking adventures. I've already been working on a full collection of relief prints, and I already love them so, so much. Keeping that work to myself is so hard. I’m so excited for you to see this part of me that’s been hiding in the shadows for way too long.
